Treetones Tour on Governors Island
 A Self-Guided Tour Featuring the Trees of Govenors Island

Treetones, is a site-specific installation on Governors Island. Hand-sewn fabric wraps, made from tree rubbings, are tied to 12 different trees on the Island. Visitors are guided by a self-directed tour map to locate and identify the trees. They may also collect bark rubbings from each stop on the tour. Highlighted species include American Elm, Red Oak, Norway Maple, Horse Chestnut and London Plane.

The installation will be on view*:

  • May 28th - 31st, 12:00 - 5:00pm
  • June 2 & 3rd, 12:00 - 5:00pm
  • June 13th - 30th, 12:00 - 5:00pm

Find the Trees
Consult the map to locate the 12 unique trees highlighted on the tour. Identify the trees by the distinctive bark rubbing sewn into the orange sash tied around each tree trunk.

Collect the Rubbings
Handmade rubbings with the name of the tree and a description of the bark may be found in the pockets of each tree sash. Please take one from each tree.
